What is cryptocurrency?

8 minute read · beginner

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset recorded on a public ledger called a blockchain. Units are transferred by cryptographic signatures, not by a bank updating an internal database.

Bitcoin launched in 2009 as a peer-to-peer cash system. Thousands of other assets now exist, with very different designs and risks. A ticker and a price do not make an asset useful or safe.

Supply, demand, liquidity, news, leverage, and narrative all move prices. Many assets have gone to zero. Past performance is not a forecast.

JC shows market data from public APIs so you can look at numbers in one place. That is not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold anything.
